His vehicle, a 1973 Lincoln Continental, was parked - Bo between the gas pumps on the west side of the station and the oe station building, headed in a northerly direction. ‘ Biedeas standing in front of his vehicle and while: _ oe watching the attendant who was checking.under the hood, he an heard gunshots being fired in rapid succession. About 30 to.. 4O rounds in all were fired in bursts of what, sounded like eight or nine shots at a time with a short pause between each string of shots. He added that a number of years ago while re- siding in Canada he had practiced with automatic weapons such as a .45 caliber pistol and is familiar with the sound of automatic gun fire. In his opinion the shots which he heard were coming from an automatic weapon of some type. The clarity of the sound made it appear the shots were being fired from outside of a building as opposed to the shots coming from in- side of a building which in his opinion would have a muffled sound, = oo The shots sounded to him Like they were coming from a southwesterly direction and he turned his attention to that ..'.. direction and saw three or four people Lying facedown on the Pies sidewalk in front of Mel's Sporting Goods Store, which is lo- 7 cated on the opposite side of Crenshaw Boulevard and a little south of where he was standing.
