He advised no startling developments had occurred since the recent receipt of the communication from the SLA, I explained to Bates that we had just had an Executives’ Conference ‘where this case was discussed and it was the consensus of the group that he, Bates, must be totally physically and mentally exhausted and Mr. Kelley requested recommendations as to the advisability of sending additional Bureau officials to assist Bates at this point in the investigation. It was _ finally suggested that two men should be considered but with the under- - standing Bates would retain complete authority and responsibility for the - _ case, One name mentioned was SAC Shroder from San Diego, The Conference had agreed, however, that we should consult with Bates. The Director indicated, however, that if Bates declined such a procedure, -he, Bates should contact the Director personally, | Bates advised he did not feel that it was necessary for any additional Talephona Rm. _ Director See'y __ assistance in this regard. He has a staff of six individuals including himself where matters are discussed and decisions made.
