FRIDAY, DECEMBER 19, 1969
Attorney General John N, Mitchell announced today
the Justice Department will conduct a special investigatio
into the December 4th incident involving the: Black Panther,
Party and Chicago Police.

The investigation will be conducted by a special
of attorneys, headed by Jerris Leonard, Assistant Attorney
General for Civil Rights, and a special federal grand jury in
Chicago. ;

true facts regarding the violence that has occurred betweep . 4 —

4th,"' Mr. Mitchell said, “and hopefully will put an end to the
rumors and speculation that has surrounded this incident,"
On December 4, Fred Hampton, Illinois chairman of the
Black Panther Party, and Mark Clark, a member of the party,
were shot to death when police assigned to the State's
Attorney's Office attempted to serve a search warrant in an
apartment believed to contain illegal firearms. Six other a“
persons were wounded.
