Sub ject: Request for field Organization charts and statements of the
functions of field services, offices, or stations,
To Heads of Departments and Independent Establishments
_ having field services:
1, The plans for collecting data and information concerning posi-
tions within the scope of the survey of positions in the field services,
now being conducted by the Board under Section 2 of the Act of May 28,
1928, include the execution of individual questionnaires (P.C;B, Form
No. 14) in accordance with the instructions contained in P.C.B. Forms
Nos. 15 and 16, Certain other types of informative material (described =
below) are requested, Ey
2, Many departments and establishments have Prepared, either for
publication or for administrative Purposes, informative matcrial respeot~
ing the organization and functions of their field services, offices, or
Stations, It is requestod that any material of this sort, which may be
already in existcnce or which can be Prepared without too much delay or
difficulty, be suvmitted to the Board for the purpose of amplifying tho
information collected through the individual questionnairos,
5. The two Principal types of material which will prove of spocial
value to the Board's staff are (a) organization Charts, and (b) stato-
ments of functions of field services, offices, or stutions,
(a) Organization Charts o Ficld Organizations, No special
form of organization chart is prescribed; but it will perhaps bo.
of assistance to indicate tho type of chart that is most informa-
tive. The charts should be such as to show tho prinoipal subdivi-~
sions and sections and lines of supervisory responsibility and
authority, They should be sufficiontly dctailed to Bive a graphic
Picture of the place of cach kind of position in the ficld organi-
zation unit and the extent of supervisory rosponsibility and author-
ity it involvcs. For a large field organization with many subdivi-
sions, thore should be submitted a master chart showing tho relae °
aie tionship of the various subdivisions to the organization as a whole,

* division showing tho relationship of sections, groups, and individual
poSitions to the subdivision as a whole, Those subdivision charts’
