The Bureau of Investigation also has under its jurisdiction
what is known as the Kational Division of Identification and Information.
Thais is a Division for the collection and exchange with law enforcement
officials everywnere of criminal information data. There are now in
the archives of this Bureau 1,630,366 current fingerprint records and
it receives an averaze of 1,460 inouirfes daily from Chiefs of Police,
Sheriffs, and other lew enforcement officials. A criminal, or suspected
criminal, apprenended in any vart of this country or abroad, may h:ve
his fingerorint impressions taken by those responsible therefor. _ This
fingerprint record is thereupon sent to the Division of Identification
and Information of the Bureau at Washington where a search is made of the
fingerprint records already on file here, together with a vast number of
index cards. The law enforcement official transmitting the vrint is then
notified within forty-eignt hours of its receipt as to whether or not a
record is on file here and the detailed nature of said record.
Appointees es Special Agents of the Bureau mst possess LL.B.
Degrees from some recognized law school or college. Appointees as Special
Accountants under the jurisdiction of the 3ureau mast possess accepted a
academic training in accounting, as well as practical accounting exper=
ience, rendering them capable of accounting work of a high order. Agents
of the Bureau perform every investigative activity in cases involving
violations of the Federal Statutes up to the point at which a case is pre-
sented in court for actual triale
