UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF J USTICE FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION In Reply, Please Refer to Albuquerque, New Mexico File No. June 11, 1968 UNKNOWN SUBJECT; Anonymous Written Threat Against the Life of Senator Eugene McCarthy, Albuquerque, New Mexico, June 9, 1968 THREATS AGAINST 1968 PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES At 11:30 p.m. on June 9, 1968 called the 4 Albuquerque Office of the FBI to advise that a threat had been “ made to the life of Senator Eugene McCarthy. This threat came in the form of a message written on a picture post card of the Downtowner Motor Inn; Albuquerque, New Mexico. This message, in blue ballpoint pen, printed in bold letters, reads as follows: "YOU NEXT MCARTHY BULLETS FOR YOU LIKE KENNEDY YOU ROTTON S,0.B," This card was apparently slipped under the door of . the McCarthy Campaign Headquarters, Albuquerque, at 215 Central, N.W. The card was discovered by Mrs. E, Ferguson, who opened the Campaign Headquarters at about 9:00 a.m., June 9, 1968. She showed’ it to about six other volunteer workers who arrived later in the day, all of whom handled it and one of whom tore it into six pieces. Mrs. Ferguson stated they delayed in providing this information to the Albuquerque Police Department “ because they did not feel it was worth being made an issue. This information was provided to Mr, Arthur W. Blake, Special Agent in Charge of the United States Secret Service Office in Albuquerque, at 9:00 a.m. on June 10, 1968. At the same time a call was placed to the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office and information was provided to Secretary Lisa Holguin.
