MC CARTHY EXTORTION By letterhead memorandum dated June 20, 1968, the Los Angeles FBI Office, under the caption yRmown’ Subject; Anonymous Threat Against Senator Eugene B. McCarthy, set forth the following information: On June 19, 1968, the president of the Chamber of Commerce, Palm Springs, California, made available to the FBI Office in Los Angeles a letter addressed to Chamber of Commerce, Palm Springs, Calirornia, postmarked June 17, 1968 at Yueca Valley, California. The letter stated, "We got Kennedy...!--McCarthy is next...signed 2.0,P-Dixiecrats coalition Heil Hitler!" . Special Agent Anthony Sherman, Secret Service, ‘ Los Angeles, California, was advised of the contents of the letter at 3:40 P.M. on June 19, 1968 by Special Agent Leroy W. Sheets of the FBI. On July 10, 1963, Assistant U. S. Attorney Michael A. Heuer, U. S. Attorney's Office, Los Angeles, advised that the above letter is vague and does not con-~ stitute a violation of the Federal Extortion Statute. It is noted the original letter has been furnished the U. S. Secret Service. This document contains neither recommendations nor conclusions of the FBI.
