oer hae ode CORPSE L STOP THE DRAFT WEEK OCTOBER 16 - 17, 1967 Speciai Agents of the FBI observed on October 16, 1967, from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. a demonstration and rally at Independence Hall Park, 6th and Chestnut Streets, Philadelphia, Pa., sponsored by PADU and supported by the Philadelphia Area Vietnam Committee (Vietnam Summer), Clergy and Laymen Concerned About Vietnam, Women Strike for Peace (WSP), Philadelphia Mobilization Committee, and Veterans for Peace in Vietnam. Among those identified were members of the Communist Party (CP), the W. E, B, Du Bots Club of America (DCA), Philadelphia Young Socialist Alliance (PYSA), WSP, Peace Committee, Committee for Non-Violent Action (CNVA}, Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), PADU, and others. Present were @lso a large number of unidentified "hippie types” for a total of about 300 people. A loud-speaker was set up on a platform, and Gordon Fels of PADU was master of ceremonies. Speakers who generally condemned United States activities in Vietnam as immoral, illegal, unjust, and who were in support of those refusing to fight were as follows: Rev. David Gracie, Episcopal Diocese of Philadelphia, who said he had previously counseled young men to avoid the draft, but to be careful not to violate the law, but now he feels that the tax laws and Selective Service laws or any laws that supported the war should not be obeyed. He said the United States has as its purpose the domination of Asia, and the United States would not be fighting if they were not fighting a colored people. He congratilated the young men who had the courage to refuse to cooperate, Thompson Bradley, Professor, Swarthmore College, said that the poor, the uneducated, and the displaced are those who are sent to Vietnam. He said the real heroes are those who refuse to go, and "we" will go to jail with them. He said the draftees are forced to brutalize, burn, and destroy the culturé of Vietnam. CrtebieLL,
