had cistritmte “weletter concerning his recent activities
to approximately 150 individuals and organizations throughout
South Caroling/and several other states,

came to Gfeenville and met with eighteen (18) South Carolinians
(8 from Greenville, 2 from Clemson, 4 from Spartanburg, and 4
from Colurnbia) to discuss the possibility of setting up a state
coordinating office ard clearinghouse, and southern mood and
tactics,
vA He related in this newsletter that, in June
Kaney reported that since early April 1971, he had
been busily engaged in counseling conscientious objectors,
speaking to high school and college groups concerning peace
and his opposition to the military draft and Vietnam War,
participating in the formation of American Civil Liberties
Union (ACLU) chapters in Greenville and Spartanburg and his
participation in anti-war, anti-draft demonstrations and
teach-ins at Furman University at Greenville, and Wofford
College at Spartanburg. He pointed out that he had also spoken
to various groups about his participation in anti-war demonstrations
in Washington, D. C,, during April 24, 1971 through May 1, 1971,
He praised the demonstrations and indicated he had been arrested
during these demonstrations,
An article in the October 8, 1971 issue of
Tn° Tiger reported that Kasey, "a member of the field staff of
Clergy and Laymen Cencerned" (CALC) participated in a debate
concéerring the rvte of tne military held October 6, 1971, on
the campus of Clemsen Lniversity. The article noted that, in
his opening remarks, Kzrey gave his views con the “atrocities”
carried out by the Iertagon ard the Armd Forces, He also gave
examples of “the inflated price of our military forces", Kaney
clained that taxes should rot be paid to further our military
goals and gave a list of figures dealing with the "senseless
miardering of civiliins" through ssch méans as search and destroy
missions, and the bombing of the “supposed Viet Cong. Racism
and the role cf tir Vietnamese people themselves were also
digscusned,
