REs POTENTIAL FOR VIOLENCE BETWEEN UNITED FARM WORKERS UNION (UFW) AND FLORIDA SUGAR CANE GROWERS, CLEWISTON, FLORIDA, OCTOBER 1972 including United States Suger Corporation which have organized into the Florida Sugar Cane League (#SCL). Sugar @rown by the FSCL lies principally to the south and east of Lake Okeechobee, Florida. Sugar grown in South Florida represents approximately Seven percent of the total sugar grown im the United States. The Sugar Growers have received permission tc bring in to the country approximately 9,000 Jamaicans to cut the ‘ugar and they will be paid about §2,25 per hour on a piece rate basis. Transportation and housing for the amaicans is furnished. The princip&§s’ period of sugar oane cutting is annually from the latter part of October through March. According to the “Palm Beach Post-Times" the UPW is seeking to obtain wp to four to five dollars per hour for domestic labor in the cutting of sugar. The UFW is expected to attempt to get authorization from a majority of the workers to represent them. Since it is expected that the Sugar Growers wouid reject the union, the UFW would then organize a strike which oould be successful only if all workers are willing to refuse to cross the picket lines.
