On October 5, 1972
advised there is
currently developing a sitwation which could result in
violence between the United Farm Workers (UFW) and the
Florida Sugar Cane Growers, The UFW is a National Labor
Union led by CESAR SHAVEZ, who has gained national attention
in the past for a “grape boycott” in California, which he
organized. The largest company of the Sugar Cane Growers
is United States Sugar Corporation headquartered in
Clewiston, Florida, Emotions will probably run very high
and violence could occur over labor organizing and the
crossing of picket lines.
The princip&f element of the dispute is the demand
on the part of the UPW that the Sugar Cane Growers hire
domestic instead of foreign labor, The Sugar Growers have
insisted that domestic labor has traditionally refused to
work in the cane fields forcing the companies to import
Jamaican labor.
According to the September 24, 1972, issue of the
"Palm Beach Post-Times" a daily newspaper published in West
Palm Beach, Florida, approximately 9,000 workers will be
required to harvest the sugar cane for seven companies
