subject. Consequently, many fingerprint records are maintained in
the United States Bureau of Investigation of persons who have been
arrested on ona or tore acgaesians but who have not bean convicted of
_@vime. On the other hand, the Bureau also receives from Police De-
-. partments dispositions of charges against arrested persons whose fin-
o, gerprints have previously been forwarded. These disvositiona aru
noted on the records of tha Bureau at the time of receipt, and tha
convictions get out in the analysis which followa represent racords
of fines and gentences of imprisonment following triel of the chargea:.
Ths distinction between charges which have been dismissed and convic-
tions of persone for tho offenses is believed to be clearly ehonn in
_the sumaary, The term "Charges Dismiesed* includes all diapositions
of thea charges: other than by conviction.
