Securing permission of Special Agent in Charge VYetterli to
proceed to Sutherland, Iom, which is in the northern part of Iom, within
the Ste» Paul office territory, Agent then formed a posse of about 14 men and
went to Sutherland, Iowa, which lies in a very rugged part of tho State,
After arrival in this vicinity efter dark ani investigating the territory,
and finding it impossible to make a satisfactory search at night, this Agent,

Des Moines, formed into three groups, and at dey break scoured a large aren
in an effort to locate tho Subjects who had osoaped, The previous camping
spot used by Subjects on Sunday, July 16, 195%, was found and Sub jects
apparently were not_roturning thereto.
The trail thereupon hea ving been lost and no further reports
received as to the whereaboute of the fleeing subjects, Agent telephoned to
Acting Agent in Charge Coulter, of the 58, Paul Bureau Office, advising him
of the occurance of the previous day, and asking him to get word out over the
redio, and to the Sheriffs in the Southern part of Minnesota in the belief that
the Subjects were mking for that State,
Agcompanied by State Agent William Arthur investigation was
made at Spencer, and Algona, Iowa, in effort to verify that subjeets had been
seen in those towns on Monday afternoon, July 24th, the day of the shooting,
but no definite information could be obtained.
At Luverne, Iowa, Agent and ir, Arthur interviewed Dave Gardner,
who operates the Shell Filling Station on the edge of town. He advised that
about 12:15 Monday noon, July 24th, a 1950 Chevrolet Coach raced down the road
and stopped at his station and ordered ten gallons of gos. The car was driven
by « party who had his left arm in a sling; a womn aat beside him in the front

and there interviewed Blanche Barrow, the wife of Marvin Barrow, at the City
