<S atore in Platte City and purchased tenic acid and toilet articles, The tanic acid was apparently to be used on the burned portions of the body of Bonnie Parkere D» Re Cleavinger has said that he can identify a photograph of Hubert Bleigh as the person in the drug store in Platte City during the evening of July 19 as he, Cleavinger, wos theres The persons at the Tourist Camp became suspicious of the activities of these persons and report was made to Sheriff Goffey, of Platte City who, in turn, contacted Mrs Cleavingers Captain Baxter, of the Highway Patrol, and two of his men were then called ins It was decided that those officers would not have the proper equipment, and therefore the Sheriff's office at Kansas City, Missouri, was called for an armoured car, as above described. Altogether there were twelve officers in the party. Sheriff Coffey and Captain Baxter approached the cabins shortly before midnight July 19, 1953, informing the persone therein thet the Sheriff was ot the door and they should come outs A worn anawered the Sheriff inform im him that the persons inaide should be given time to dress. Tho Sheriff and Captain Baxter waited for a minute or two and when there was no apparent activity on the inside of the cubins Sheriff Coffey is alleged to have said "Well, let's | give them some gas", Immediately thereafter firing began from the inside of the cabinss Sheriff Coffey had en iron shield in front of him. This shield | was hit several times, Coffey was shot in the little finger, on one side of his | neck, and slightly in the shoulder, none of which wounds were serious, sheriff | Coffey and Captain Baxter retreated with the protection of the iron shield, which | is the only thing that saved their lives, ‘The armoured car from the Sheriff's Office, of Jackson County, containing four deputges, was pulled up in front of the garage door to the cabin to prevent the gang inside from eseapings ‘This armoured car has bullet proof glass and has armour plate around the bottom, The | bullet proof glass was riddled and there were § holes altogether in this "armoured" care Agent examined ite It wes shot up like a sieves It contained four deputies, only one of whom, George Highfille, was wounded through both legs, The bullet that wounded Highfille, which was shot from one of the Browning Automatic Rifles, went through the armour plate and through the steering post of the automobile, md then through both of his knees, His wounds are said not to be serious, Sheriff Coffey's son was standing several yaris away from the camp, in the kitchen . of the restaurant, end one of the bullets from the Browning automatic rifle went through a tank and hit him in the erm. His wound is said to be serious, but he will recover. 4fter all of this gum fight from the eabins the officers retreated to safetye Buck Barrow and hie wife were occupying one of the cabins.
