O QE TS) 4. & & E i : Mrs. Alberta Ahearn, 23i1 Payne Street, Louisviile, Kentucky, a self-2dmitted former member of the Communist Party (CP) Louisviiie, Kentucky. testified cr December 11, 1954, in Jefferson County, Kentucky, Criminal Court in a State sediticn prosecution against Carl James Braden. Sne identified Carl James Braden and his wife, Anre McCarty Braden, as having been known to her as members of CP from January, 1951, to December, 1954. A source advised on March 2, 1961, that Claude Lightfoot, a Communist Party functionary, stated at a meeting of the Communist Party in Baltimore, Maryland, on February 25, 1961, that the Com- munist’ Party has some indirect influence in SCEF. A second source, familiar with some phases of Communist Party activity in the New Orleans area, advised on June 3, 1966, that during the time that the SCHW was in existence, members of the Communist Party were members of and worked actively in the SCHW; however, since the formation of the SCEF, Communist Farty members have not been encouraged to work in SCEF. The source stated that the SCEF is a progressive, Ziberal or ganization because it has gone along with the Communist Party on certain issues, par- ticularly on the racial issue. A third source advised on May 25, i865, that George Meyers, a Communist Party functionary, expressed great admiration for Carl and Anne Braden and SCEF, which they head. The second source also advised cr June 3, 1966, that many people who are officials and supporters of the SCEF, while liberal in their views, are by nc means Cemmunists.
