BERTHOLD VIERTSL is known to this office as a refugee writer fron
Nasi Germany. He was born on dime 28, 1885, at Vienna, Austria, and clains
Austrian citizenship. He entered the United States in San Ysidro in tiarch 1942,
but has spent very little time in this country from then until May 1959. He is
an acquaintance of FRITZ LANG, and OTTO XATZ, and is eaid to have assisted Katz
in German underground work in the summer of 1939 by making anti-Nazi record-
ings with LANG and others. From 1933 to 1939 he contributed articles to
“International Literature” and "Das wort," which magazines were published in
' kussia by a group of German exiles, including many Communists. ie was stage
manager of “The Tribeune," described as a Communist propaganda thester in .
Wew York City. His wife, SALK%VIERTEL, contributes to “New Hasses" and ise”
said to have once contributed to an alleged secret collection for Stalin in
i856 or 15955.

During the latter part of 1942, according to this source, BERT
BRECHT, HANNS BISLER, and FRITZ LAG were working together cr a film entitled
“Unconquered.” BRECET was the author of this story, LAG the director, ard
BISLER the music writer. The name of this story, however, was later changed
to "Hangmen Also Die.*

According to this source, "Hangnen Also Die“ is a war melodrama that
was produced by ARNOLDPRESSBURGER, directed by FRITZ LANG, and adapted from the ;
original story by BERT BRECHT and FRITS LANG. This source déscribed the producer,
PRESSBURGER, as a sympathizer with the Hollywood Communist element and stated
that oritics claim this film to be Commnist propaganda.

“Bangmen Also Die," in the early part of 1945, and that he had worked in the
production of this picture as e story writer and a technical adviser on under-
ground activity in Europe. The authenticity of this film, according to this
source, was largely due to the work of BRECHT, whose imonledge of ths wader-
