Ineidentaliy, Mr. Moneypenny informed us confidentially at
the conferenca on Jauuary 26 that his seriousness of purpose might
further be substantiated by the fact that he desired no unfavorable
publicity, because he hoped at some time in the future to secure the
position of harden of the Penitentiary at Joliet, Illinois.
I was informed by Mr, Laubenhelmer that a conference was
held last Friday with the Sheriff, and thet the latter was to advise
the Murshal concernine this matter’ at once. However, Mr. Laubenheimer
states that he has not received any eall fram the Sheriff up to the
present time. The Marst.ci further advised me tht he offered as 4
suggestion to the United States Attorney, that Capone be sent to the
Great Lekes Naval ‘reining Station or to Fort Sheridan, preferably
the fois: , oni placed in the brig there, but that this suggestion
had probably not met with a fcvorable reaction,
‘r, Laubenheimer again suggested that the presence of an
Agent of this Bureau at the Jail to supervise the passes of persons
Visiting Cepone on visiting daya would, he felt sure, be the most
locies? sctetier. Ue was, of course, informed that I did not believe
the solution to be ‘uite logical, and that it was without my
jurisdiction, end that the limited parsonnel of this office did not
allor such procedure in any event. It 4s my belief that this ides
is definitely ait of his mind now,
Mp, Laubanheimer further atated that the Sheriff has not
eallec uu, -L-..u,L he Ras been expecting him to do so momentarily,
an? it appears that no concrete action is being taken to prevent
Capone's ¢ommuniczxtion with outsiders, unless it is being done at
the Jail, and at the present time no inquiry has been mede there.
I am holding this matter in the present status, and intend to make
no inquiry at the Jail unless further developments take place,
insamuth as I believe such inguiry there would be fruitless.
For your further information, and with reference to my
letter of January 27, 1952, with which was enclosed 4 newapaper item
appearing in the Chicago Herald and Examiner of thet date concerning
State Representative Charles Coia, please be advised that Mr. Lauben-
heimer informed me this morning that his information is that Mr. Coie
is taking this matter up with Senator James Hamilton Lewis with the
revuest that the Senator in wire of the Attorney General the reason
why ‘ta citizen who is clenn™ cannot be allowed the privilege of a visit
with Capone. “tr. Coie, I am informed, still has the pass which gerents
him perm scion to visit with Capone, but the Marshal atsates that to
G6t6 he Cus uct velieve Mr. Goia hes used it. 4
Very truly yours, rd
