_ Inspector John L. Sullivan, Special Investigations
Squad, Metropolitan Police Department, advised September 22,
1963, approximately 10,000 people participated in a demon-
stration held in Lafayette Park across from the White House
on September 22, 1963, which was held for the purpose of
mourning the deaths of four Negro girls killed in the
bombing of the Baptist church in Birmingham, Alabama, on
September 15, 1963.
Approximately 3,000 people assembled at the All
Souls! Unitarian Church, 16th (and Harvard Streets: N. W.,
to Lafayette Park. Two viacards were carried at the head
of the marchers which depicted a scene of the bombed
Birmingham Baptist church and which were captioned "No
More Birminghems,"
Additional people joined the group and at the
time the ceremony at Lafayette Park began at about 3:20
P.M., Inspector Sullivan estimated the crowd to be 10,000
people.
inspector Sullivan stated many of the marchers
wore black arm bands and the first person to address the
group in Lafayette Park was Dick Gregory, well known
television star. Julius W. Hobson, President, Washington
Chapter of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) was the
next speaker. Inspector Sullivan stated Mr. Hobson
commented that the demonstration was being held to protest
the events in Birmingham, Alabama, where mob rule and murder
have replaced justice and law. Mr. Hobson commented that
there have been numerous bombings in Birmingham, Alabama,
which have gone unsolved. He stated politicians from all
