Memorandum for Mr. Belmont RE: UNSUBS; BOMBING OF 16TH STREET BAPTIST CHURCH Dynamite sources are being checked out for possible | teads and inquiries are also being made as to any recent thefts of dynamite in the Alabama area. Detailed neighborhood investigations | have been initiated including inquiry at service stations, hotels, motels, restaurants, taxicab companies and similar places to obtain information regarding any suspicious persons who may have been in the area at the pertinent time. Our informants have been alerted and close contact is being maintained with then, . In addition to the deaths which occurred as a result of the church bombing, two other Negroes were killed in Birmingham on 9/15/63. In one incident Johnny Robinson, aged 16, was shot and killed, reportedly by an officer of the Birmingham PD as an outgrowth of Negroes throwing bricks and rocks at police officers in the vicinity of 8th Avenue and 26th Street, North, In the second incident, Virgil Ware, aged 13, was shot and killed on Sandusky Road, between Adamsville and Graysville, Alabama, suburbs of Birmingham, The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, which is investigating the Ware killing, has advised that two unidentified jj white males on a motor scooter are suspects in this case. SE Memes ee -- The Birmingham Office will keep the Bureau advised of pertinent developments regarding the deaths of Robinson and Ware. With regard to the situation in Birmingham, the city remained relatively quiet during the night. Chief of Police Jamie Moore advised our Birmingham Office that he had requested that 150 uniformed officers of the Alabama Highway Patrol be sent to Birmingham to assist in maintaining order. These officers arrived in Birmingham on the night of 9/15/63, Units of the Alabama National Guard in Birmingham have reportedly been alerted and a number of National Guardsmen are reportedly standing by at armories in Birmingham, ACTION: This matter is receiving close personal supervision and pertinent developments will be immediately brought to your attention.
