At this time, the Scholar is introduced to his next ii'ving group. He
ig invited to a dinner where hs meets his naw group and may bo asked to give
a brief talk. Ho meets his futuro roommate, whe has been carefully selected by
the House President under the guidances of the Co-Chairmen and Evaluations Direc-
tors. Tha introduction helps the Scholar to bocome acquainted with the students
who will bs his hosts daring Winter Quarter.
‘Garistaas Vocation
After finals, tho Scholar may go to ons of several places during his vaca=
tion; Usually he goss to tho homs of an American student friend. The choics
depends largely on tha Scholar's popularity in his living greup and an honest
estimates, on the part of those who know hin, as to whether he would fit in with
the stuient's family suceossfully. If ho dessa not go hom) with a student, he may
find placement in a local American home, or he may join the annual international
student , trip to the Grand Canyon.
Winter Quarter
The Foreign Scholar finds his winter program similar to the previous one in
' many. respects, though probably busier. To him, fraternity rushing may seem in-
ordirately impertant, and for two weeks he has to put up with this anmal madness.

| mare urgent. The formal woekly mestings with tho Committee: continua. Regular
| parties are held. There are additional tours to other ‘universities in tho area,
! the Scholar bagins to.make speaking engagemants off campus, : and he may participate
| in a radio or television program over a lecal station. :
If his gradas for Autumn Quarter were low, he 4s asked, to talk tho mitter
over With tho Co-Chairman in an effort to find the causes of academic difficulty
and to prevent a recurrones. He may find that his monthly allowance is in-
sufficient and that he has been dipping into the small reservw he brought with
him. In that caso, ho probably wants to work to augment his incom. If he isa .
graduate student, ho may bs able te seeuro a teaching assistantship, or to work
as a readsy for a professor in his dspartment. Lf not a graduate student, he may
find work in language tutoring. Again he is asked to writo a mid-quarter evaluac
tion esaay. At sema time during the Quarter, tho Scholars and the Co-Chairman
usually are invited to the President's hous. for an evoning.
After Christmas, tho emphasis in the Scholar's progran | ‘ts shifted from the
Stanford campus to a wider sphere to give the Scholar a more thorough introduce
tion to American lifs. Therefore the teeckly seminars includs businoss and
professional people as wall as professors. ; .
‘Daring the winter, ths ‘Scholar maets with the Co-Chairaan to ‘discuss his
Plans fer spring vacation, summer, and his return travel. When the selection of
the next yoar's Scholara:is complete, each of tha Schelars then at Stanford is
asked to write a personal letter of weleoms ‘to ona of the nev avard winners. &a
bafore,- the first year's Scholar recaives an introduction to his living greup for:
Spring Quarter, and ho rf questioned closely on his suggestions about tha pro=
gramming for Spring Quarter.
