Late in the afternoon of March l4, l950. referred to a comversation suggested that in the event he had any information of interest to the over. J9at advised that approximately tap or three weeks ago he receivsd information indicating that Senator. cCarthy was lookdng for an investigator. Upon talking to the Senator! agreed to undertake. on a fee basis the irvestigation of certain cases. said that he was assisted locally by. and more recently for He added that. a shorter period of time by. handled some of the leads in New York. explained that Senator licCarthy had spme information. and it was the duty of he and his coworkers to endeavor to develop this material. He said it was a terrifically hard job in that in but a few cases was there any substantive material and, further, since Senator McCarthy was constantly #jumping the gun.". Hentioned tat he and his coworkers did succeed in getting some inforuation on approximately four or five good cases which the Senator was to use in his statement before the Subcouwittee on Foreign Relations this week. Horolr, quite obviously, continued, the Senator was not relying completely on his investigators but must have had some other sources. For example,. Stated, he and his group furnished the Senator absolutely no infor- mation on Dorothy Kenyon. Whoever made material on her available to Senator McCarthy did it #yia the back door.". said that he suspects He added that the Senator's mentioning her came as s conplete surprise to him and the other investigators. then stated that former Inspector E. P. Morgan had been named as General Counsel of the Subcormittee on Foreign Relations to probe this matter. He was of the opinion that no other menbers of the staff had been selected at the time of his conversation.' He said that would be a Republican but that he, gathered from talking to Morgan. that lorgan wanted a free hand and was not concerned with the political question. /21-23273-48 said that he and the other investigators who assisted him material available to Senator McCarthy.
