About that time the Soviets entrusted Gustavo Duran rith some missions and finally appointed hin their agent.. 3. "Upon the proclanation of the Spanish Republic, the "Porcelana" (as he. was niclnaned) returned ts lacrid. His identity papers indicated that he was the representative of the Paranount Film Co. Horever, his true mission. was servicc of the G.P.U. Duran was creatly successful in his activities due to the political protection he enjoyed. He soon becane one of the lead-. P ing neubers of the Youths of the Comrunist Party and greatly contributed to. the nerger of the Conunist Youths with the youths of the Spanish Labor Party, thus giving birth to the J.s.t. ("Juventudes Socialistas Unificadasn. United Socialist Youths), of fateful renerbrance, since this organization cormittec the nost ccld-blooded crines before 18 July l936 (date of the military uprising) and during the red revolution which ensued.. "During the republican regime (l93l-l936) Duran continued practising his #HrHh. Together with other "close" friends of his and some young pro-conmunist poets, anong shom Alberty was noted, Duran succeeded in beconing notorious. All then were his tools and all then were nade into active conmnists. Duran's release fron his frequent imprisonnents for. #**++******** conduct was due to his porerful political protectors, who blindly obeyed orders fron the Sovict political police. 5. nupon the national uprising (beginning of Civil War) Gustavo Duran took over the nearest convent to his house, called "las Sicrvas de Laria", located at the old Chaaberi Plaza.
