SOUTHERN STUDENT ORGANIZING COHMITT: : :MNOC)
-On November I, l966, a tirst source advised that
the Southern Student Organizing Committee (ssoc) was formed
on the weakend of April 3-5, lslit, to stimulate activity 'of
southern.student groups in areas of civil rights, peace,
academic freedon, civil liberties, cagltal punishment, and
'unemployment. Criginally, it was to b a white counterpart
of the Student Nonviolent Coo'dinating Committee (Sncc).
It
has agreed to work with similar interested groups such as
Sncc and Students ror a Democratic kciety (sDs) and Southern
Conference Edueational Fund, inc..
( cFF). sscc is a fraternal.

Beginning in the tall of j9ss. ssoc became a
membership organization and cnoarked on a campaign to form
South. ssoc publishes, October through May each year, a.
publication,
"New South Studcnt," wltich. according to the
above source, has increasingly espoused and delended the
pro-communist and anti-united States position on domestic
and foreign policy.
By letter dated pril 26. l968, on Ssoc letterhead
mailed to the general Ssoc membership over the signature of
Mike NeIch, Txecutive Secretary of ssoc, the was announced that
as a step toward close relations with the Students for a
Democratic Society (sDs) and better comaunications with the
movement nationally. Ssoc and sDs have worked out an exchange

SDS and ssoc were exchanging contact lists of their respective
memberships ior this exchange.
