Dear Sir: Transnitj the Bureau's copies of the report of Special Agent dated at Springfield, Illinois October 15, 1943. recent occasions Special Agents! and have conferred with United States Attorney HwR! Doyl. at his request. These conferences were in the nature of informsl conversations concerning general aspects of the case. On one occasion Lr. DoylE advised that while he was in Washington, D. C. about two weeks ago the Attorney General informed him specifically, in the presence of various attorneys of the Lepartment, that this was DorlE's cass and that he was entirely responsible for the case.. Revertheless it appears that any action DoiLE may/intend to take will be contirgent upon instructions he receives fron the Department. Cn October ll, l943 DorlE advised that he had received a letter over the signature of FRANK COLEhAN, Special Assistant Attorney General, advis- ing that CoLeuAN would be in Springfield on October 12th or 13th to assist DorlE in proceeding with prosecution. However the Ietter indicated that ColewAN was to have a final corference with TOM CLARK, Assistant. contacted CLARK on October llth to ascertain the results of this conference. He stated CLaRk informed him that the case was still under discussion in the Department and they were trying to arrive at a conclusion as to. whether the evidence warranted proceeding with prosecution. DoyLe said that CLaRk suggested to him that he discuss with Agents of this office the statenents which had beer. made under oath. A discussion was had with DoyLk Nr. Dorle has not thus far requested this office to take any?. requests for investigation he will be informsd that instructioilrfu:-2. nished this office require that requests for investigation be cleared. through the Bureau headquarters in Washington, D.
