On 11/22/78 at approximately 11:00 a.m., SA
, Civil Rights Unit, Criminal Investigative Divisidn, FBiHQ,
was contacted by
Civil Rights
Division, Department of Justice, who advised he did not know what the
extent of our investigation was concerning the Peoples Temple but that he
had located a document in his files that may be of interest to the FBI.
immediately obtained this document, which
is a letter dated April 14, 1978, bearing the letterhead Peoples Temple of
the Disciples of Christ, Jim Jones, Pastor, addressed to All Members.of
the United States Senate and Members of the House of Representatives, the
copy obtained by
being addressed to Griffin Bell,
Attorney General, postmarked 4/26/78 at San Francisco, California.
The letter encloses a voluminous petition and expresses concern "over
what appears to be continuing and unwarranted harassment on the part of
Governmental agencies. "
stated there was no record of any acknowledgement of
this document. He requested that the original document be returned to
him. It consists of approximately 104 pages of signatures of approximately
3,330 people supporting the position of the Peoples Temple. The original
document will be Xeroxed for review and thereafter returned to the
Department of Justice as requested.3
