TODD AlAN GITLIN was advised of the identity
of the interviewing agent and the purpose of the intended
interview.
Befoee the interview began GiTlIN was furnished
with an "Interrogation; Advice of Rights" form, which he
read, stated he understood his rights, and was willing to
furnish an oral statement. GiTlIN advised that he had been
visiting relatives in the New York area and his publisher,
Harper and Row, and that his intended travel was to return
to his residence in San Francisco.
On the morning of

had driven him to Newark Airport. GlfLIN advised
that he held United Airlines Ticket #430ll2 in the mme of
Mr. GiTlIN for United Airlines Flight l49 departing Newark,
New Jersey, to Chicago, Illinois, with connecting flight
to San Francisco. GiTLiN advised that he arrived at Newark
Airport at approximately 10:20 - 10:25 a.m. and that he and
were driven to the front of the Newark Airport
Passenger Terminal where they got out of the car and
proceeded to park the vehicle. GiTLIN states that he and
walked to the United Arlines ticket counter where he
checked a suitcase with a United Airlines ticket agent, whose.
name is unrecalled. After checking his suitcase, he decided that
he would also check two shopping bags which had been tied
together. GiTlIN stated that he was a bit sleepy at the time
he was checking in and that when the ticket agent asked a
question to the effect "Is there anything fragile in the.
shopping bag", he thought it to be a rather unusual question.
