On June 25th, Assistant Secretary of State Clayton submittcd to the Senate Military Affairs Committee evidence that Argentina has failed to eliminate a single case of Suspected German economic Penetration. Ac- cording to evidence submitted by Mr. Clayton, the Allies have been unable so far to yeach some 104 Axis spear- heads in Argentina. And, significant- ly enough, the campaign to eliminate these’ spearheads also has not fared so well in either Paraguay or Uru- Guay, the neighbors of Argentina. The implication was that the Argentines had signed with their eyes closed and their fingcrs crossed. Among the pledges recalled by Mr. Braden were: “That war crim- inals shall be tricd and sentenced: that centers of Axis subversive in- fluence throughout the hemisphere shall be eradicated ; and that enemy Properties, investments and other holdings, beginning with those Stolen from their Victinis, shall be soughi out, immobilized and contro}led.” President Truman has since ap- pointed the militant ambassador tc Argentina, Assistant Secretary of State in Charge of Latin American Affairs. Mr. Braden, who has dem- onstrated his democratic convictions. may be expected to liquidate the am- biguities which marked the policy of his predecessor, Nelson D.
