Mikva, date of birth January 21, 1326, Social Security Account Number 394-165-9842, was contacted at his place of employment, the University of Chicago Law School, Chicago, Tllinois, telephone (773) 702-9590. Also present during the meeting was Michelle M. Peterson, Associate Counsel to the President, The White House, Washington, BD.C., telephone (202) &56-3804. After being advised ef the identities of the interviewing agente and that of Department of Justice (6d) Trial Attorney Mikva provided the following b6 information celatimg to hig Cemure as White House Counsel during b7C the CRinton administration: Mikva advised that he was appointed ta the U.S. District Court of Appeals, Districh of Columbia, by President arter in 1979. He became Chief Judge in 1991 and remained in that position until 1994. If was at that time that he had lunch with Lioyd Cutler, whe was the White House Counsel. Cutler asked if he {(Mikwa) would be interested in the White Housa Counsel job. Mikva replied that he was interested and as a result Cutler went back to the White House and reported this to Lean Panetha, the White House Chief of Stait. 3 63 Mikva advised that in September, 1994, he became Couusel to the President of the United States [POTUS}). He stated that he did not receive a salary from this position, buh instead took his judicial pension. His primary responsibilities as Counsel te the POPTUS included supervising 16 associate White House Counsels and being invelved as the Legal Counsel for the xeview of matters important to the POTUS. He would meet with senior White House staff and Cabinet members and alse attended weekly meahings with the DOJ. Yhe DOJ meetings would center on Giscugsions related to matters looked at by both White House Coungel and DOT, such as Wace. As White House Counsel, he would alse attend meetings with mewbers of Congress to discusa legislative and overview iesues. Finally, White House Counsel is responsible for judicial selection for federal court positions. Mikva left his White House Counsel position in November, 19955.
