Jones to Bishop Memo
RE: REQUEST FROM SENATOR STROM THURMOND'S OFFICE
bé
bc
retained was_that of Arnold, Fortas and Palmer at Washington, D. C. a
According , Fortas was the type of individual who had influence
in Government circles regardless of what administration was in power and
that Fortas had obtained for him a mailing permit for Rogue” magazine.
No mention was made in this interview of any fee to Fortas
for his legal services, nor was any such information found in other logical
files.
OBSERVATIONS:
It would appear that Senator Thurmond is attempting to
assemble ammunition to use in opposing the Fortas nomination as Chief
Justice to the Supreme Court. It appears prudent that we not become
involved with any such opposition.

RECOMMENDATION:

] That someone from your (Mr. Bishop's) Office telephonically
advise the Senator, through his Assistan| that we cannot be
of any assistance and that he should direct his inquiry to the Department of
Justice.
