The following interviews were conducted by SA
JaMES H. DILLON on July.20, 1965:
U.S. Senator ROMAN L, HRUSKa, Nebraska, advised that
he has known FORTAS for approximately ten years on a professional
basis. HRUSKA stated he met FORTAS when he came to Congress and
considered this man to be one of the top attorneys and
Presidential, Congressional and Judicial advisors in the
Washington area. Senator HRUSKA advised he has had some social
contact with FORTAS and considers him to be an individual
of high moral character who is well regarded as an excellent
reputation and in his opinion is a loyal citizen. Senator
HRUSKA stated he has never heard anything of a derogatory
nature concerning FORTAS and he would recommend him to any
position of trust and confidence that the President saw fit
to appoint him,
U.S. Senator HOWARD Ww. CANNON, Nevada, advised he
has known ABE FORTAS for six to eight years and that he met
him professionally either shortly before he came to Washington
or when he arrived in Washington. Senator CANNON stated his
relationship with FORTAS has been mainly professional and he
is held in high regard by members of Congress and other related
fields in Washington. Senator CANNON stated he considers
FORTAS to be a very capable person and he has never heard any-
thing of a derogatory nature concerning him, Senator CANNON
stated further he believed FORTAS has a very good reputation,
is of high moral character and a loyal citizen, and he would
not hesitate to recommend him to a position of trust and
confidence.
U.S. Senator GZORGE MURPHY, California, advised he
has known of ABE FORTAS by reputation for approximately 25
years, and has known him on a professional basis for approx-
imately 15 years, Senator MURPHY stated he has limited
contact with FORTAS but knows that he has been an advisor
of Presidents since the Roosevelt Administration and has
never heard of anythéggrof a derogatory nature concerning
FORTAS, Senator MURPHY stated he would recommend him to a
position of trust and confidence.
