Veg of oot gee FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION - 9/18/68 : On September 17, 1968, LILBURN BOGGS, Special m Agent in Charge, United states Secret ‘Service, "Chicago, lliinois, was interviewed concerning security measures eonsidered necessary by Secret Service during the Democratic National Convention (UNC) in Chicayo, lllincis, in August, 1064, anu furnished the followin ’ information: The U.S. Seerct Service had the duty under the law to protect a number of candidates for nomination by the Democratic Party fous the office of President of the United States during the DNC, In pursuance -of ties - - duty Secret Service cooprrated with the National Guard, the Chicazo Police Departiuent and other law enforcement agenc ieS to arr ange the necessary secur ity . Secret Service had seen a number eof reports of such scrions Aature Conceyne ing the possibility of havin to candidates for the ..0,..nat.on that no doubt whatsoever existed that extensive sccurity wecautions were necessary, ¥ Beginning on Aurust 24, 1968, the U.S, Secret Service "secured" the Anphithceagre aad the duwuiate area, By this, he said he meant that a "bomb sweep" was cosuucted and a112 appropriate searcnes made and thereafter, the Amphitheatre was placed unuer a. secucity guard, Security precautions were not only neccsiary at the Amphitneatre and its inmediate vicinity but were neces- sary clsewhere in tine cCily fer the purpose of secur taj: anpress and cypress for candidates for nomination lo ain fren the Amphitheatre and further, to secure Lieir temporary residences in duwntown Cuicayu hotels, ln connection with security arranjenments to be in effect during the DNC, tac City of Chicapo isqguireu whether In the judyenent of the S secret Service a marcli of demone strators to the aAnphitneatre would constitute a thrense to those persons being protected by the Secret Service.
