Vey om. t 4 ut , e . e é ” FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION _ 9718/68 Oate — Oe an ee : On September 17, 1968, LILBURN BOGGS, Special Agent in Charge, United states Secret Service, Chicago, Jliinois, was interviewed concerning security measures considered necessary by Secret Service during the Vewocratic National Conventaon (UNC) in Chicajo, lllinois, in August, 1964, and furnished the following information; The U.S. Secret Service had the duty under the law to protect a number of candidates for nomination by the Democratic Party fus the office of President of the United States during the DNC, In puxysusnce vf tie. - - duty Secret Service cooprrated with the National Guard, the Chicayo Police Departhient and other law enforcement agencies to arrange the necessary security. Secret Service had seen a number of reports of such serious nature conceyne- ing the possibility of harm to candidates for the .o..anatson that no doubt whatsoever existed that extensive sccurity precautions were necessary. Beginniny on aAurust 24, 1968, the U.S, Secret Service "secured" the Anphithestore aud tae Diuwauiate area, By this, he said he meant that a "bomb sweep" was cosuucted and a1) appropriate searcnes made and thereafter, the Amphitheatre was pliced unuer a. secucity guard.
