Re: YOUTH INTERNATIONAL PARTY (YIP)
On June 29, 1972, the YIP ataged a One-hour
anti-war protest at Miami Beach, Florida. This consisted
of a disorganized march from the front of the Miami
Beach Convention Hall to the Par Three Bayshore Golf Course.
About 45 persons participated, although at times the line
of march excesded 150, mostly “teenie boppers", or real
young teenagers who followed along. Numerous placards
bearing anti-war slogans, such as, "Will the United States
Occupy Miami Beach This Summer?"; "War Ain't Healthy”;
"Free Martha Mitchell"; "Nixon is a Sneaky Goy"; "War
Ain't Right", were carried. During the line of march,
the participants staged a guerrilla theater with an anti-war
theme. Several of the marchers were in costume and reportedly
imitated Martha Mitchell and President Nixon. At the
beginning of the gathering in front of the Convention Hall,
Miami Beach Mayor Chuck Hall appeared in his white Rolls Royce
convertible and praised the demonstrators for their peaceful
actions. Mayor Hall indicated to them that he had been trying
to get the golf course for them and the best way they could
do it was by the law.
The march started out with some anti-war singing
with obscenities, but this was cut down somewhat at the
request of the Mayor. A short mock meeting was held representing
the Miami Beach City Council. Jerry Rubin was dressed in
what represented to be a bathing suit but was actually long
underwear and was one of the predominant individuals in this
affair. The marchers concluded the march at the Par Three
Golf Course, where they were wlcomed by about a half dozen
senior citizens who held aloft a banner, “Senior Citizens of
Miami Beach Welcome--To Non-Delegates With Love”. The marchers
were escorted by policemen on motorcycles. It was peaceful
and there was no vidence or disturbances of any kind. Jerry
Rubin, who is considered the leader of the YIP movement in
Miami, indicated he was pleased with the march and démonstration
because of the coverage it received by local and national news
media. The only regret of the YIP members, including Jerry
Rubin, was that possibly the march was too long and that Mayor
Chuck Hall of Miami Beach had gotten too much of the “spotlight”
in comparison with themselves.
