APPENDIX STUDENT NATIONAL COORDINATING COMMITTEE ‘ the Student National Coordinating fommittee (SNCC} formerly known as the Student Nonviolent 0rdinating Committee, is a nonmembership orgenization founded in 1960, during the civil rights movement in the South. Under the leadership of Stokely Carmichael, who served as National Chairman during the period 1966-67, SNCC evolved from a civil rights oriented group into a full-blown black revolutionary organization. A publication entitled "1967 High Tide of Black Resistance” indicates the year 1967 was considered by SNCC as a ‘\istoric milestone for the liberation of black people in the United States and the year that revolutionaries throughout the vorld began to understand more fully the impact of the black vevement. The publication declared that "liberation will come ‘aly when there 1s final destruction of this made octopus~-the napitalistic system of the United States with all its iife- sccking tentacles of exploitation and racism that choke the »ople of Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The realities of black life, together with the recognition instilled in SNCC workers, forced its members to further popularize the legiti- macy of self-defense and rebellions when oppression became too creat.” ae: H. Rap Brown succeeded “narnichael as rman of SNCC in May, 1968, and cerved in that capacity until June, 1968, at which time SNCC ccorganized, creating ten deputy chairmen in an effort to relieve pressure by law enforcement. In April, 1969, SNCC moved its national headquarters “rom Atlanta, George, to New York City, where it is presently located. H. Rap Brown announced at a press conference in New York City on July 22, 1969, that he had been elected Chairmen of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. Ke announced the organization was dropping the word "“yonviolent" from its title and will be known as the Student National Coordinating Committee, with a Revolutionary Polit ical Council functioning as its governing body. Brown, at that time, stated the use of force is neces ary in obtaining -ovolutiomry goals. ¥ ~- ee we me ee eee eee Reon bip
