UNIDENTIFIED OF “TF OVER OAK RIDGE, TOUNESSEE - ~" October 1950. -
On the evening of Octoder 24, 1950 I was attending a moving picture
show at the Oak Ridge out-door drive-in theater. I errived oman
at 6:45 which was about 15 minutes prior to ahow time. While sitting
ant With my wife and children Tcarualiy glanced svard tvarta
ntivest. and observed what I at first thought to be an wumsually bright:
+The exceptional brilliance caused me to continue to observe it
+ jcdsenty seemed to change color rapidly from a reddish hus to a Bb:
‘and again to a brilliant light blue. My son noticed that I waa :
observing something and questiched as to vhat it was at which time I wah
hin to look at the star and tell me what he sav. At first glance he
immediately said that it did not look like a star to Lim at a1] because
of the change in coloring. My wife also noticed the same phenomem. By
now I was certain that I was not merely having an optical illusion. X fev
moments later I heard a plane directly over head making passes over the
Oak Ridge area, which was later identified ase one of the F-8 fighter plane
from the Air Force unit stationed at the McGhee-Tyson Airport.
re
I hesitated to approach other whicles in the theater to witness the
object, but managed to reach a telephone at the projection building and
called , HEPA Division, £7
Fairchild Engine and Airplane Corporation, at his home to ask hin whether
or not he could see in that direction and possibly observe the object.
A later check wi indicated that hia hame was located im a
poor geographical position to observe anything towards the southwest becaum
of hills and other obliterating features of the terrain. Ne did, however,
drive to a higher location but fafled to see the object.
While returning to my car I met a friend, QURERE of Knorville, hb |
to vhom I pointed out the object. Ne stated he hat been observing the
object. I cantinued to observe the object together with my wife vut it
eeomed to be in a slightly more northerly position which caused me to
select a fixed point to determine whether or not the object wae dhanging
ineither altitude or direction. There seemed to be a deviation from aorth
to south for approximately five to ten degrees. The ohanging in colors ver
etill very evident but the object seamed to be continually getting emaller :
smoller as though it was becoming more distant. At approrimtely 7:35 by =
watch it disappeared from view entirely. During these observations my wife
continued to report to me the identical things that I was observing. Duwrin,
the entire time the F-& airplane continued to make passes over the area wn’
approximately 7:15. The weather condidtions were excellent; the air was
calm; and the sky vas cloudless with the exception of a very alight haze on
the distant horizon.
