Lg reported conference of army officials in Portland concerning flying discs ji. fue —
L.. te the Portland Office has advised thut Leaveritt G. Richards, aviation "Klas Gandy
if ro editor of the acer has stated that Captain Willian Louvidson
: =F and Lieutenant rrank } own of the Fourth AsF Headquarters, San Francisco,
Pos. were in Portland on july , 27, 1947. While in Portland they interviewed Dick ‘
[- “ih “ALnankin, an experienced nilos, who had reported that he observed, on June lh,
f 4%. a fommtion of ten flying discs over Bakersfield, California. Richards added
Ro hat Davidson and Erowm had also interviewed tne following four experienced
" ee ‘pilets who were among the first to report seeing discs, KennethTirnold, businessman
So from Boise, Idaho; Captain &. IXSaith, a co-pilot; Ralph-Stevens, United Airlines
and Davy Johnson, aviation editor, Idano"Statesman." In order to determine the
pursose of these interviews Hichards contacted Major General Twining of “right rield
Ohio, and from him gained the impression that the AAF instituted this investifation
to wash out the disc reports since they are definitely not of AAF origia. ae
On Friday, August 1, the plane in which AAF investiputors, Captain
Davidson and Lieutenant Brown, were flyins, crashed at Kelso, Washington and both
wore Killed. The wreckace was screened by AAF Intelligence from McChord Field.
The "Tacoma News Tribune" and through them tne United Press put out a story that
the pline was carrying parts of a dise wnich had struck a boat owned by Varold
Dahl and Fred Chrisman. It has also been inferred that this plane was sabotazed
to prevent these disc purts from being examined.
ST +TUS
Investigation by the Bureau has reflected that this plane was iefinitely
not carrying parts of a dise and there appears to be no substantiation of a subotaze
charge.
For your further information there is attuched a blind memorandum setting
forth in more detail the results of the investigation surrounding the above plune
crash. No further inquiry is being zade in this mattor.
