THURGOOD MARSHALL conrmveo
“because he has always been away so much, their home life in the
apartment in Harlem meant a lot to him. For months the doctor
kept his wife’s illness a secret from Marshall. When he learn~ %
it he was so shocked that he almost collapsed. The last six \_~
before she died he stayed with her continuously, rarely leaving the
apartment and refusing to see his closest friends.
After the funeral Marshall drove himself harder than ever. In
spite of his occasional bragging and his flip manner, he is humble
about his work. “I’m convinced someone else could do this job
better,” he says. When Negro parents in Clarendon County, S.C.
came up to him during the first school trial and thanked him pro-
uselv for taking on their troubles, he seemed embarrassed and
would only say,
in private practice much more than the $15,000 he gets from
N.A.A.C.P., but his friends would be surprised if he quit. Several
years back a Southern judge who had presided over several cases
argued by Marshall asked him if, when he started out, he had
thought he would get so far so soon in his war against segregation.
Marshall said no, he had not. Under the circumstances, the judge
went on, didn’t Marshall think that maybe this might be a good
time to pause for a while? a
“Of course not,” was the reply. My
“If we stop now, we’re lost,” says Marshall today. “They're
going to try everything’in the book to get out from under. Our job
is to stay ahead of them.” The N.A.A-C.P. has a full docket of
plans ready for the campaign ahead.

Ready to go county by county
HEN he was told last week that some Southerners intended
to fight the new Supreme Court decision with every rule in
or out of the books, Marshall was undismayed. “We would have
no recourse but to take them to court,” he said. “We are prepared
to go county by county and we will do so. Our counsel is ready.
willing and able.”
The task of deciding whether or not the decision is being obeyed
will } be in in the hands 0! of the federal district courts, tight where
Charlie Houston and Thurgood Marshall always wanted it to be.”
This means that w sherever there is continued segregation in schools
Marshall and and the N-A.A.C.P. will be there to sue for redress. Some
of these cases certainly will be appealed, and so will have to go
on to the highest tribunal. As Thurgood Marshall left the Supreme.
Court building last_week, he squared his shoulders and said, |
“We're gonna be back.”*

READY TO JUMP wherever next segregation case calls him, Marshall perches
on table in New York office and goes over plans with N.A.A.C.P. experts.
