Memorandum to Mr, Evans THURGOOD MARSHALL The following is a brief summary of some of the activities of Marshall: In 1939 registered with the American Labor [2.39 in New York (cited by BCUA). {In 1942 Marshall wrote a report adopted by the National Executive Board of the National Lawyers' Guild (cited by BCUA) demanding vigorous prosecution by the Department of Justice of state officials for their failure to act in lynching cases and for denial of franchise to Negroes to vote. lin 1944 Marshall was listed as a national committeeman of the International Juridical Association (cited by BCUA). In 1945 Marshall was listed as a sponsor f a meeting of the National Negro Congress (designated pursuant to BO 10450). and she was reported as a pneaber of the Communist Party. No association was indicated during the investigation. In 1947 Marshall was one of a group of attorneys who urged New York Congressmen to oppose contempt citations in the case of the Hollywood writers. lin 1947 he was a speaker on a program sponsored* by the Progreasive Citizens of America (cited by BCUA). In 1948 in ea meeting sponsored by the National Lawyers' Guild, Marshall opposed Executive Order 9835, the loyalty order, as an infringement on Civil Rights. In 1956 Marshall gave the keynote address at the NAACP convention in San Francisco and set the anticommunist theme for the convention.
