the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee this
past summer, that 500 Hell’s Angels
were on their way to the scene. _
The state legislature rushed through —
a new riot-controt law, providing for
fines up to $500 and a maximum of one
year in jail for those convicted of being
rioters and fines up to $1,000 and three-
year jail terms for anyone convicted of
causing personal injury or property
damage during a riot. The old fine was
only $25.
All told, some 15,000 cyclists gathered
in the lakeside town of Laconia for the
four days of racing events. Although
‘most of the newcomers were obviously
interested in the sporting angle, plus
some beer drinking and fun, what wor-
ried the steel-helmeted state and local
police and 200 National Guardsmen were
groups who vroomed into town wearing
Wellington boots, grimy jeans and black
leather jackets—and also the signs that
appeared on telephone poles along. the

What happened at Weirs Beach, a
Laconia suburb, was right on schedule.
“The Hell's Angels started it,” said
Commissioner of Safety Robert W.
Rhodes, “They stopped traffic, tipped
over a car and set it ablaze. Then they
threw a ring around the whole area.
They wouldn't let anybody get away. The
thing blew up in our faces in minutes.”
Shotquns Quelled Riot .
The guerrilla-like battle lasted several
hours. Cvoelists struck out with jethal
bicycle chains. They broke windows and
set fire to buildings. They stoned the

swinging. Tear gas shells exploded and
National Guardsmen, advancing with
fixed bayonets, fired shotguns loaded
with rock salt and No. 6 birdshot into
the crowd.

A week or so after the Laconia out-
break, some 259 Hell's Anwels gathered
weak, some Angels gath
at Bass Lake, Calif. a resort area where
thev had created disturhances on earlier
visits. This time 100 officers—sheriff's
deputies, police, highway patrolmen and
rark ranrers—met them. rode herd on
them and finatly escorted them on their
departure, .

gels had been in serious trouble much

It was at the door of one of these
club haunts, a rather rickety house in
