(AP) — Surrounded by seven armed guards, Theodore Bundy, accused of murder in the slaying of a Michigan nurse, was returned Monday to the second-floor courtroom of the Pitkin County Courthouse from whieh he escaped last week. He stood, unshaven and shackled, as District Court Judge George Luhr told him he would be charged with escape, burglary and theft and set Thursday for arraignment on those churges. Bundy, 30, was captured before dawn Monday by two sherift’s depulles who stopped a stolen 1966 Cadi!lae on the outskirts of Aspen. They said the driver had slumped down and run off the road as their patrol cars passed. Extremely Fatigued Bundy was extremely fatigued and “unable to think anymore,’’ the sheriff's department said, and he complained of getting only 10 hours of slecp since his escape, He was allowed to sleep Monday aflernoon in a base- ment cell in (he courthouse. After questioning Bundy, the sheriff's depirtroent said he apparently had been within 10 miles of Aspen since his escape last Tuesday. There was no evidence that_he was assisted by Ci arses anyene in escaping or Sine out, the sheriff's department said. A sheriff’s department sergeant, Don Davis, said Bundy was asked why he escaped and replied, ‘I didn't want to go back to jail. it was just too pretty outside," - Looking for Opportunity Davis said Bundy also told him he had been icoking fer an opportunity to eseape. He managed to do that by jumping from a second-Noeor window in the hack of the courtroom when left unguarded during a reeess in a pretrial hearing. “T believe Ted derived a certain amount of satisfaction from the fact he pulled it off as far as he did,” said Davis. f . Bundy was limping when he ap peared in eourt Monday and the sheriffs department said a doctor would examine a knee he apparently injured in his escape leap. Bundy faces trial here on a charge of first-degree murder in the January, 1975, slaying of Caryn Campbeit of Dearborn, Mich.
