Officials Hunt Aspen
Area Hills for Bund
ASPEN, Colo. (AP) — Searchers
donned ski-racing bibs to identify
themselves, and officials used specially
trained dugs to comb neighboring hills
Wednesday for Theodore R. Bundy.

“We've had no new leads, nothing at |
all, to indicate where he might be,”’ said
a sheriff's department spokeswoman.
Bundy, 30, is charged with the
January 1975 slaying of a vacationing
Michigan nurse, He escaped during a
recess jn a pretrial hearing by ieaping
from a second-floor window Tuesday.
About 150 persons conducted a house-
to-house search in Aspen: and sur-
rounding areas Wednesday. Officials
concentrated their search within a
20-mile radius of this Rocky Mountain -
resort town, still insisting that Bundy,
was in the area.
Cancel School Sessions -
Officials also canceled school in
Aspen Wednesday. The sale of guns and
ammunition has heen banned in the
area since his escape Tuesday.
Roadblocks remained up around this
Rocky Mountain resort town and on
major highways as far as 9 miles
away. .
Officiats in Garfield County said
Wednesday they are looking for one of
Bundy’s former ceilmates who walked
away from a work release program in
Glenwood Springs lust week.
Women Extremely Cautious ~
Aspen-area residents, meanwhile,
reacted to the escape with a mixture of
fear and anger. Many residents arrived
home early Tuesday night, locking
doors and windows net normally.

thought women in the area were
especially concerned and many were
taking the advice of authorities nat to
go out alone at night. “The whole thing
distresses me," she said. “This man is
dangerous endugh for the police depart-
meut lo warn citizens to stay inside and
lock their doors, but he wasn’t danger-
ous enough for them te watch him while
he was in the courtroom.”
Dist. Atty. Frank Tucker also criti-
| cized the lack of security whieh allowed
Bundy to escape. Tucker said he had
vflen warmed about Bundy's desires to
escape and also had requested that
Bundy be shackled at all times and
under a two-man guard, which was
| denied by the court.
“There's no excuse for what hap-
pened yesterday,” he said. The district
attorney added that he would
file escape charges against Bundy.
Pacing in Courtreom
Two deputies had been assigned to
guard Bundy during his appearance in
District Court here, but a witness said
she saw Bundy packing alone in a
courtroom just minutes before the
escape.
The former law student was charged
with lirst-degree murder in the death of
Caryn Campbell of Dearborn. Mich.
Her nude, frozen body was found beside
a rural ruad a month after she
disappeared.
A one-time worker for the Republican
party in Washington, Bundy was extra-
dited from Utah to stand trial here. He
was serving a i-lo-15 year sentence In
Utah for the 1974 kidnaping of a Salt
Lake City girl.
