Assistant Attorney General Civil Rights Division that symbol numbers in the file had either been furnished to your office or had occurred prior to January 2, 1966. — OR On July 28, 1976, in connection with a recent INTD- initiated survey of all field offices to determine whether | or not their respective informant symbol number indices contained numbers assigned to surreptitious entries, the New York Office consulted INTD as to the identity of certain symbol numbers which that office could not identify. The following INTD search located a reference to the main file, "Security Informant Program.* - A veview of the New York Division main case sub-f1i1« "Security Informant Program," showed a number of memoranda showing assignment of informant symbol numbers to "highly confidential sources." This review was made on July 30, 1976. No symbol numbers for New York were located in this file which fall within the scope of your inquiry, or which have not been previously furnished to you. . (%) The standard filing procedure for memoranda dealing with highly sensitive confidential sources calls for filing in the “JUNE" section of the main case file. As mentioned above, the “JUNE” section of "Security Informant Program" was reviewed on April 30, 1976. To insure that our search . for memoranda dealing with “highly confidential source” symbo: numbers was thorough, on August 2 and 3, 1976, an in-depth review was made of the "Security Informant Program” main case file for all other offices. This review failed to disclose memoranda showing assignment of symbol nimbers to “highly confidential sources," however, one s 1 number was located which falls within the scope of your ry. yg .
