PaGE 10. | @ENERAL JAPANESE SiTUaTION PBOLITICAL my, +. a, JAPANESE CROP OONTRACTS FINALLY KNOCKED AUT, The recent decision of the United States Supreme Court, in the Case of Attorney General wedd of California against o'Brien and Inouye, sustaining the anti-alien bie” law of this state with respeot to erop contracts, is an excelient example of the judioial reasoning which iooks beyond the mere wording of a oontract to actual meaning and purpose. O'Brien owned ten acrea of land in Santa Clara County, and entered into a oropping contract with Inouye, a Japanese, for four years, with fuil rights to oseupancy and housing. Inouye was to have half of ali crops as his share of the results of his work and expenditures. | On appeal, an attempt was made to have the contract construed as one of employment, but the United States Supreme Court eaye in its decision, aa now published in full: We are of the opinion that it ise more than a contract of empleyment; that,if executed, it will give to Inouye a right te use anf to heave or share in the benefit of the land for agricultural purposes. ahd this is so, notwithstanding other clauses of the con- tract to the effect that the gensral possession of the iand Se reserved to the owner; that he is given one-half of all erops grown eg compensation for his services and labor, and
