Levison and King agreed that if Carmichael was convicted of the "inciting to riot" charge, "they" would have to blame those forces which compelled him to riot, (Confidential Source, not identified) In a subsequent press release, it was reported that King, at a news conference on 9/11/66 at Montclair, N.J., issued a state- ment concerning Carmichael's arrest which was substantially the same as previously agreed to by King and Levinson. 100-439190-725 p.l;encl.p.1,2 (14¥ The following references in the file captioned "Martin Luther King" (100-106676) contain information concerning the activities of Stanley D.
