King stated in the article, "The murder of the President, regardless of the precise identity of the assassin, occurred in @ context of violence and hatred that has been building up in our nation for the past several years." King mentioned "We have seen children murdered in church, men shot down in ambush in a manner 30 similar to the assassination of President Kennedy that we must face the fact that we are dealing with 8 social wWeewe w i Tek et el als oe A Fe ake We a her Met oe ele disease that can be neglected or avoided, as we have done only to our deadly peril." King said the tragic fact must be faced that President Kennedy was the victim of developments that have made violence and hatred a popular pastime in all too many quarters of our nation. It was indicated that many people will ask the question of whether the assassination of President Kennedy will mean an inevitable setback for the cause of civil rights. In answer to this question, King said, “When Abraham Lincoln waa assassinated. he was aucceeded by Teena Seek Se eRe eat ee ee Sew ee oe Qe ne oe a ee ee Gee ee ieee te eee ee te & Vice-President of Southern origin" and "his successor had neither the experience nor the passion of Lincoln." King stated in the article that "the reconstruction movement ended and the release from physical slavery was carried through because the forces which had generated that change were too powerful to be turned back." He stated that "later Negroes suffered a setback in being denied full freedom and equality, but different elements were responsible.
