Se ‘ The references as to HELEN GILIIS having been held at the Chicayo office, pa rtioularly then she was firat apprehended ani held here, it is be lieved are know to the Bureau, that ia, as to the source from wh toh the newsapavers ohtained the information indicated... As to the articles which anneared the nicht before Helen Gillis appeared before the Crand Jury in January, 1935, no one was aware of the fact that she was held here at that time until late the day before she appeared before the Grand Jury, at which time thie tnformation tas furn- ished to the United Statea Attorney at Chiv-ago,fllinoia, anc it is possible that the U.5.A4ttorney made some raference to the fact thnt he intended to use her before the Grand Jury, and this may have been the source from which the newspapers inferred that she was being heid by us at that time. It is known definitely that it was announced early the following morning that she would appear before the Grand Jury thot mornin: to t-stify in that oase, as this was announced to the ne. apes by the U.s.attormney. The article which apneared as to the alleged confession of AILLINM BRYAN ROLTON and his connection with the St.Valentine Day massacre Febru- ary 14, 1929, was based entirely upon mis-information, inagmich as he head made no such statement to anyone, an’ at the time thase articles appeared Bolton had been taken to 5t.Paul and eurrendered for official custody at that place, indicating of course definitely that we previous- ly had had him in custody. The recent articles anpearing in the papers referring to the atleged confession furnished by J.5S BOYLE to Federal 4gents at Kenaas City I do not believe had any reference to any informa~ tion obtained at Chicas, and judging from the report from the Kanssas City office that the associated press dispatches there do not show rn dis- patoh to St.Paul, and the explanntion offered by the representative of the associated preas at St.Paul that he had reaeived this in an associ-~ ated press dispatoh from Kansas Oity, this would indlonte that the sourde of this information wae probably St.Paul, an¢d while I have no information upon wich to base same, it is my belief that possibly Attorney 4 DeCourcey at that point may be resnonsible for this article which appeared, Previously we have had «4 very cureful check made of the tale-hones at the Chicuro office, and the taleshone commany has iniieated there is no nossibility of a tap on any of our linea here, and als? judging
