Dear Sir:
With further reference to my desire to ascertain the source of in-
forma-ion obtained by Chicaro papers, concerning official Bureau activities,
prior to the time that any maetice is given to the press, your attention is
invited to the followine facts whic’ have been brought to my attention by
assistant Director Nathan.
Mr. Nathan reeclls that on the moming followinsthe apprehension of
Doe Barker, & newspaper reporter appeared at tie Chicago rureau Cffice, and
asked Ir, Nathan wheter it was not a fact that Alvin “arpis was in eustcdy.
You will recall that it was the belief of the Bureau, followin: the -pprehension
of Doc Barker, that tre person who had been apprehended was .lvin Harpis, and
aecordingly, esveral long distayce telepho:e cells were made between the Bureau
and tre Chiescc .ffic>, pertainin= to the apprehension of Harpis. hil: itis
possible that tre newspaver reporter who contseted wr, Nathan may fave been
merely ruessinz, trese facts may have some significance in indicatins that a
telephone tap i= or was hein? maintainecé upon telephones of the Chicago Bureau
Cffice. Please give this matter eppropriate emsideraticn, in connection with
your efforts to ascertain the source of theinformaiion reaching the newsnapers,
