BACKGROUND #
A nemorandum of the Director dated March 17, 1954, reflects
that the Deouty Attorney General, at a conference on that datey
advised that on Warch 16, 1954, the Deputy Attorney General had
visited with Senator Fulbright relative to Senater Fulbright's
stutement that it was his opinion that the FRI was furnishing
infornation from its confidential files to Senator HeCarthy's
Committee, Senator Fulbright gave the Deputy Attorney General
a clipping which appeared in the "Boston Herald” for Mondays
March 15, 1954, which reads in part as fellows:

"They heard Alfred Kohlberg, publisher of ‘Plain

war if the diplomats seft on Comnunism remain in

“net Comnuntsts, but they take a fovorable atti tude

The Pirector tnatructed that Kohlberg be immediately
interviewed for any facts which would support the statement which
he te quoted as having nade at Boston an March 14, 1954, and
that a memorandum be prepared on this matter for the Deputy
Attorney Generel who intends to show it to Senator Fulbright.
By telephone call on March 18,5 1954, SAC Kelly of the WVew
York Office together with a mature agent was instructed to tniter~
view Kohlberge SAC Kelly advised on March 18, 1954, that an
appointment had heen made to see Kohlberg at 10:30 AeMey March 13,
1984,
INTERVLEW WITH ALFRED KOHLBERG
The New York Office aduised by teletype March 19, 1954,
that Kohlberg was interviewed on that date by SAG Kelly ani an
agent of ¢ New York Office, Kohlberg stated
