Five Years And 80 Investigations as
Al bvnein West Virginia In the year
1950 a‘elatively unknown freshman senator
named McCarthy shocked the nation by an-
nouncing that he had a list of 205 card-car-
rsing Comununists in the Denartment of
state. Later he changed this figure to 81,
still later tu 57, and after much debate, he
finally handed ta the old Tsedings Commit.
tee of the Senate a list of 80. No matter
what Mgure he used, the shock didn’t grow

Five vears have passed, McCarthy has
become a national figure, al! the people he

been
named on have subjected
fear, and anguish, and scorn, and endless
investigation, and now it appears to be fi-
nally and definitely established that there
were no Communists in the Department of
State in 1950, and ihat uione of the people
McCarthy named were disioval. The deter-
mination has been made by a Republican ad-
ministration, acting through its assistant
secretary of state, Thurston EB. orton.

To give McCarthy ois greatest due, it
seems probable thai the government might
have been beiter off without some o7 the
people McCarthy named as Cormraunists.
MeCarthy adherants have always argued
that they didn't mind his exaggerations so
long as there was some truth in what he
said. This
his a:vument ha: always seriaed to
us to be dangcrous—-would the same people
teach a child to tell the truth part of the
time?—but it is not pertinent anyhow.
The Republican administration has now
revealed that there was no truth in what he’
said.
