To advise you of the results of an inquiry to determine the “me
_ individuals referred to as "agents" and "Communists" in a chart of alleged Pro-~
. Soviet individuals mentioned by Senator McCarthy before the Senate on June 6,
: 1950, In brief, all have resigned from Federal employment except three who, have
been investigated by the Bureau as subjects of LGE or VOA cases, one who a
suspended without pay as the result of an LGE investigation, and one who wa
known to be employed by the Army overseas and whose status will be checke

BACKGROUND?
You will recall that Senator McCarthy on June 6, 1550 mede a statenent
before the Senate to the effect that three or four years ago the FBI supplied the
State Department with charts and diagrams purportedly. showing pro-Soviet individuals
in the State Department, Inquiry disclosed that the thart was prepared by a State
Devertuent employee, It purported to show the number of "agents", "Communists",
tsumpathigers" and “evepects" in the State Department, On Bureau instructions, the
Washington Field Office has checked the names of those persons listed as "agents"
and "Communists" against State Department and CSC files and has ascertained | that
all of the individuals mentioned ere no longer employed in the Federal Goyernment
with the following exceptions:
